Three Books and A Baby

Last week I pried my lovely little parasite from my womb.
Isn't he a cutie pie? (For safety reasons, I'm not posting any more information about him. I hope you understand.) I'm cured of my placenta brain and will be back to normal in no time. YAY!

It's no surprise that for the past several weeks I haven't been writing as much as usual, but I have been reading nonstop. So, I'd like to share my favorite recent reads.

Hex Hall Series
Technically these are three books, but I read them so quickly and they flow together so nicely I'm counting them as one. The plot grabbed me from the get-go and didn't let up. Above all, the teen voice is fantastic. These are fun, fast reads with tons of humor.

Entwined
This book has received mixed reviews, but I love it. Dixon's writing is beautiful, the voice of each princess is distinct, and her antagonist reminds me of David Bowie from the Labyrinth. This is worth borrowing from the library.

The Girl of Fire and Thorns
This book wasn't a fast read for me. Though the story line is intriguing, there's a lot of religious symbolism that caused me to stop and pause—in a good way. I enjoyed the MC's characterization, but this has an older feel than YA. I'm lending it to my adult friends.

What are you reading?

  1. I really liked Entwined, surprisingly so. Haven't read the other two, but they are both sitting in front of me in my tbr pile. I'm in the mood for a fun, fast read, so maybe I'll go with Hex Hall.

Thanks for the recommendations, and your baby is ADORABLE. Congrats!

  12. Congrats on the new arrival! Funny you should post those three books by Ms. Hawkins. I've read the first two, but haven't yet got my hands on the third. I enjoyed the first two books.

  13. Congratulations! He's adorable! My two-year-old, Jack, was looking over my shoulder and yelled, "BABY JACK!" :P Those books all look intriguing. I just finished "Before I Fall" by Lauren Oliver and I'm planning on reading "Code Name Verity" soon because I've heard such good things. I also just read "The Scorpio Races" and LOVED it.

  14. Oh baby boy, you are too cute. Auntie Jenny will come and take care of you. ;0)

I haven't read the 1st 2 and I've heard nothing but good about the first series. I finished Prized 2 days ago. It was pretty good.

  18. What an odd thing to say...I don't think I've ever heard a mother call a child a parasite. Hmmm. I kind of like it. It's creative.

  24. He's so cute! Just want to know bigger or smaller than the others? I have read Entwined - had mixed feelings about it. The others are on my to read list...somewhere...

  25. Cute, cute, cute!! Huge congratulations to you and your hubs. Hope you are getting SOME rest, though I have to admit I always liked those middle of the night moments alone with the baby. The mornings, not so much. :)

  26. Yay! Congratulations on baby boy! And on no more placenta brain :) Now you get new-mommy-brain for a while (even though you've done this before, maybe it should be new-baby-mommy-brain). Enjoy each other!

I'm about to return Hex Hall to the library, it's been in my stack forever and I haven't read it. Maybe I need to rethink that one. I think I should put Entwined on my list and I couldn't read The Girl of Fire and Thorns, so not my style (but I've heard a ton of people loving it).

  29. Yaaaaay! "Placenta brain" <----LOL. And I've heard about the Hex Hall Series. I SO need to get those! And I'm soooo glad you can start to get back to normal... the writing will come and I hope you're surviving in your sleep deprived state! It's soooo HARD! You're amazing though :D

  30. Congrats on your baby! He is totally cute!

Those look like some pretty stellar reads-- I'll have to check them out. I'm not reading nearly as much YA as I used to, and I miss it.

I just started Journey to the West, which is a Chinese epic. I know, you probably don't hear that every day. But I've become quite interested in Chinese mythology lately.
