It's time to talk about my favorites!
List your favorite genre of:
Movie
Music
Books
And a guilty pleasure genre from any of the three categories!
MOVIES:
Romantic Comedies
I can't get enough of them. Some of them, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I own and watch over and over again. If TBS is playing Sleepless in Seattle, you can bet I'm watching it. And when cruising the new releases on Netflix, this is the first genre I check. My poor husband has suffered through many rom-coms.
MUSIC:
Alternative Rock
I have to admit, I don't get the latest music craze. I've never been one for rap, or hip hop, or whatever you call it. I love alternative rock—Incubus, Staind, Muse, Foo Fighters, etc. Gotta love those drums!
BOOKS:
Romance
And I mean ANY romance. If a story has romance in it, I'm in. If it doesn't...well, I won't read it. Some of my all-time favorites include GONE WITH THE WIND, anything by Jane Austen, GRACELING, FIRE, THE SCORPIO RACES, TWILIGHT (don't poke fun at this one, the romance in it is fab, even if I'm not fond of the MC), and the list goes on and on. Yep, romance is my only qualification. Bring on the LOVE!
GUILTY PLEASURE:
Reality TV
I know TV wasn't one of the categories, but my only true guilty pleasure—like makes my face red admitting it—is watching reality TV, specifically The Real Housewives of...anything. I enjoy watching these catty women try to one-up each other in money, style, plastic surgery, rich husbands—you name it. I justify this guilty pleasure by claiming it's research for my writing. Really, I just like a good cat fight.
What are your favorites?

Alternative has been a popular choice today. And your favorite movie genre was my guilty pleasure.
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!
Awesome choices. Something tells me your writing must be teeming with romance, right? :)
I'm not sure how this has happened, but I've never seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding! Sleepless in Seattle is great, though! :D
Emily, I love rom coms, too --- which also drives my husband crazy. I almost don't care to watch anything outside of that genre --
Yay for romance! It's really hard for me to like a book or movie that doesn't have some kind of love story in it. :)
Alternative music and books with romance. Yay! Can't say I like reality TV. But I love movies, and I LOVE My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Great answers.
Yay for your choices. We could hang out.
I sometimes think I am a bloke in disguise. Maybe it was growing up with horror and war movies, but I'm not really into romance and I'd rather eat my own eyeballs than watch those Hollywood bints. Romance is always the worst part of a movie for me (yuck, gross, get on with it, type thing)... but I do really enjoy My Big Fat Greek Wedding (and own it too!). So maybe there's a little woman in me somewhere. (Oh look, there she goes now.) And yeah(!), to alternative music. :)
Fun.
I adore My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Though the first time hubby and I watched it he had a shell shocked expression on his face at the end. When I asked him what was wrong he said it was a little too close to marrying into my family. I think he was joking....
Oh reality tv!! It's one of mine too. I live for Real Housewives! Who's your fav housewife?
Whoop! A fellow Twilight Fan! Ugh Reality TV, SO FAKE. But anyway I like that you're into Alternative Rock. Muse and Foo Fighters definitely rock.
I don't get rap either--unless it's super mellow like Digable Planets or old Black Eyed Peas.
But i don't care for reality TV. Too much like real life, only cheaper. lol
But love romantic comedies! And novels! And you're so right--Twilight romance was white hot! There's a reason why it was a bestseller. ;)
My guilty pleasure is romantic comedies. Can't get enough of them!
Knuckle bump on the romance!!!
(I am also guilty of being drawn in by the Snookies of this world!)
I like romantic comedies, too! I enjoyed reading your list.
I love it! Fab list, Emily. There are some reality tv shows I LOVE... SURVIVOR!!!!!!! ;)
I'm a reality TV show junkie too, including Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, American Idol....and I even watched Stars Earn Stripes this summer...loved seeing those kick ass women working with experienced warriors.
Also loved Gone With the Wind...I think I'm due for a reread on that one.
I have to admit I haven't ever seen/read Gone with the Wind. That seems so pathetic.
I don't watch much reality TV because the people start to annoy me after a while, but sometimes it's a good reminder of how normal I am. :)
Love your music choices! And I loved Twilight too. :)
Staind is one of my all-time favorite bands! I find their music very inspiring when I write. And who doesn't love romantic comedies? I mean, really!
Gone with the Wind, another forgotten favorite. That's the problem with this -- I really have too many favorites. So hard to pick on or two, or even three!
Hi Emily,
I'm with you on romance. Not so much a fan of romcom, but anything that makes me laugh is good. Ya know, I like rap music, just not the ones with violent lyrics.
I used to not read romance at all. These days, I've gone outside my boundaries a bit and have been surprised by some novels with a romantic element in it. My reading tastes change a lot.
I like hip-hop, but not rap no much. There's a difference between the two. Interestingly, both are rooted in r&b.
Bring on the LOVE! That is too cute, Ems.
Incubus is an awesome band -- I've liked them since first hearing "Pardon Me." Phenomenal drummer, for one thing.
Fun choices!
Love a good rom com! Love your choices ;)
Some really fabulous stuff in here today. Love The Foo Fighters! And high fives on the romance. I love it!
Could not put down The Scorpio Races! That book mesmerized me.
Love all your choices Em!
Great list! I'm guilty of watching my share of reality TV too. I don't watch as much any more, but sometimes I'll end up staring mindlessly at a reality show and wonder how I got there!
agreed on all counts! I loved The Scorpio Races, made me want more!
I am with you on the reality TV guilty pleasure. As I've gotten older, I've decided to just embrace it. After all, it's not like I don't also read a ton as well--balance.
ohmigod, GWTW is my fave book of ALL TIME! And, I am a closet Housewives Watcher. I blame my sister for getting me hooked on the OC. And NYC. Oh, yeah, the trainwreck that is the NJ Housewives. *hides*
Nice meeting you today, Emily!
I'm totally with you on Romantic Comedies. Couldn't turn off Sleepless in Seattle if my life depended on it.
Emily, I love the romantic comedies--especially Sleepless in Seattle.
Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting!
Monti
Mary Montague Sikes
I adore Sleepless in Seattle! And anything with John Corbett in it gets my vote. I hope he reappears on the TV show Parenthood.
Love your choices
I have such a voice crush on Matthew Bellamy from Muse. <3 sigh...
Also, I just finished an internship with the romance division of an indie publishing house... it was quite an education! Have you read anything by Georgette Heyer? She's "regency romance", wrote in the 20's, 30's... I recommend "Venitia" or "The Talisman Ring" by her. Lovely :)
Romantic comedies are the best. Even my husband likes some of them!
I love romance too. I read Gone With the Wind for the first time when I was about fourteen and have read it many times since.
I think a little bit of romance can make any book/movie a lot better. :)
Reality TV is always interesting to watch, if not for the drama that they have.

I join you as a "Gone With the Wind" junkie!
Romantic comedies are fun! I loved your comments about your guilty pleasure - a good cat fight . . .funny.
Oh, reality tv. I get waaay too much enjoyment out of that! Great stuff Emily :D
Cool choices! I love the music you listen to.
I enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding too! I like alternative too--though alternative is such a mainstream style of music nowadays, sometimes I feel it should no longer be called "alternative."
David, you got that, did you? :)
Kim, me too. I do like adventure, fantasy, and action on occasion though.
Ilima, no reality TV? Not even cooking shows?
Carrie, ha! You're so funny. You have a little bit in you somewhere, I know you do.
Elizabeth, I can't abide Snooki. But I can name most of the Housewives on Bravo. :) Don't judge me.
Sherry, thanks!
Jessica, thanks so much. :)
Suze, all you need is love, right?
Chris, I've liked them since about then, too.
Vik, thanks!
Melissa, high five!
romantic alternative, reminds me of romeo & juliet w/di caprio! great mix!
Hi, Emily,
You have TWO of my all time fav movies.... BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING and GONE WITH THE WIND ...
The shocker is reality TV... WOW...
I enjoy Romantic Comedies, as well. Great list!
Jaybird, that books was amazing.
Prerna, me too!
Liz, NJ is the only one I can't watch often. It makes me cringe too much. :)
LD, I really do love that movie!
Monti, thanks for stopping by mine and doing the same!
Elizabeth, thanks for the rec. I'll check Ms. Heyer out.
Tamara, I've read it half a dozen times, too. SO GOOD!
Gina, I agree. I can't get enough of it.
Victoria, I do too. *hides face*
Clarissa, I like it too. Gets the blood flowin'. :)
Cynthia, I know! It used to be alternative. Now, not so much.
Tara, I LOVED that movie in high school. *sigh*
Muse is definitely loaded on my iPod. I enjoyed the Twilight series also, so no poking fun from me :).
I love that reality television is your guilty pleasure. My friend is so addicted to the Kardashian show.
Sleepless in Seattle is one of my favorites too. I'm actually surprised I don't own that one.
Reality TV ranks right up there with my guilty pleasure (which was celebrity magazines). After all, all the reality TV stars are in the magazines!
Great list. Such a fun blogfest today. I'm a new follower!
Romantic comedies seem to be very popular today. Maybe because they're awesome? ;)
Love those Rom Coms! I have been getting into alternative music recently too. Incubus is a new find for me (although I know they've been around for a while).
It seems like every blog I read today I'm saying, "Oh yeah! I love that, too!"
No poking fun about Twilight :-) Although I wanted to throw that book against the wall but thought better of it because that move would cost money if it damaged anything, there's no denying it had romance in it.
Ooh, yes Jane Austen! And a good chick flick can never go wrong.
I love romantic comedies. When Harry Met Sally is one of my all time favorite movies ever. Just wanted to let you know I am sending out (or Kindle delivering0in your case) the past four winners of Hiller's Freak, this week. Sorry for the delay, I was swamped all last week,
Wow, I am late responding to this (one of those crazy busy days)! If I don't know who Incubus is can we still be friends?
Love your choices, been a while since I listened to Incubus, about time to remedy that. Reading all these lists makes my to read/listen/watch list gigantically biiiiig
I grew up reading a lot of Romance novels, but it's been ages since I read a good romance story! It seems like romantic comedy movies have a wide appeal...
I love the Foo Fighters.
Would you believe I've never seen Gone With the Wind?
Romance novels are always a go to for me, as well. =) I love a happy ending.
Yay! Another Muse lover! I don't think I ever found a song they released that I didn't enjoy. :-D
Have to I've watched a few episodes of Real Housewifes Of and it is addictive!
Gone With the Wind is one of my favorite romances, too. It's sad, but there's something so charming about it anyway
Great choices! I love My Big Fat Greek Wedding!
You hit all three R's: romance, rock, and reality. Sounds like fun to me!
I especially agree with what you wrote about romance. A story is always more interesting to me if it has romance in it. And all the stories that I've written have romance in them too, because I think it's more fun that way.
I like Incubus, but I still favor pop over alternative. :)
I loved My Big Fat Greek Wedding! And I'm a sucker for romance novels, too. Hey, I'll admit, I read Twilight three times. Once, just because. Twice to chat with my middle school kids who were reading it at the same time, and three before the movie came out. By my 3rd read, I was tired in more ways than one. But it gets an A+ for romance. Heck, Edward and Bella will go down in the history of love stories.
I like romantic comedies and romance and reality TV too! Bravo is one of my most recorded channels :)
I have to admit I can also turn red at how much I enjoy some reality shows. :D
Great choices, I didn't take part in this blogfest but it sure is fun to read the entries. You made me want to watch Sleepless in Seattle again! I love the soundtrack to that movie too. <3
I loved My Big Fat Greek Wedding! Such a fun movie.
I really loved The Scorpio Races. Such a great story.
I cannot stand reality TV, but the rest of these I can definitely share the love on :) I haven't read THE SCORPIO RACES. Gotta check this stuff out!
So fun to get to know you more through this! I'm a big fan of reality TV too--mostly singing competitions, dance competitions, anything competitions. I also love home improvement shows and What Not to Wear in the reality category. I haven't watched any reality TV in months! Too busy writing. :-( but :-)
Your post made me laugh - not your choices but the way you explained them. You have a great sense of humor. Be proud of what you love! :-)
I don't watch reality TV, but I sure do love alternative rock and romantic comedies.
Rom Coms are my favorite. There are some total gems out there, like Dan in Real Life or Last Chance Harvey. And I've been meaning to read Gone With the Wind for a long time now. I should get on that.
